A Review of Caribbean Beach Resort – Part I

I began to get really excited last year when Disney announced free dining for this past March. When I looked at the dates on the offer and realized that not only was it during my kids’ Spring Break, but it was also the week of my birthday. I was so excited that yet another Spring Break trip would soon be ours! How could I be denied free dining on my birthday and Spring Break? Of course, I didn’t get much of a fight and my kids were as thrilled as if it were their first trip, not their 11th! However, I did cause them to gasp aloud when I told them to pick a moderate resort since we wanted the regular dining package and not just the quick service variety that comes with the value resort package. We could’ve paid the extra for free dining and stayed at a value resort (um, Pop Century!), but I just threw the moderate thing out there to them.

We looked at all the moderates, and to be honest everyone was really struggling with not going back to Pop Century, which has become like home to us since we first went there in 2004. The only moderate we’ve stayed in was Port Orleans Riverside and no one really wanted to go back there. After browsing pictures of moderate resorts, the kids informed me that we must go to Caribbean Beach since it combined our two favorites – Disney and the beach!  I made the reservation and I must admit I second and third-guessed myself for months until I was forced to stop reading comments about the resort. There are a lot of negative things out there about CBR and it really concerned me a little.

Fast forward to the day we arrived at Caribbean Beach resort. It was a beautiful day as we pulled into the gates.

Photobucket

We pulled into the parking lot of the Custom House and found plenty of great parking. When we stepped inside, it wasn’t crowded and the atmosphere was so relaxed. I had completed the online check-in, so I picked that line and was face-to-face with a cast member in just a minute or two. Check-in was flawless and the cast member was very friendly and helpful. As he was wrapping up, he reached over and handed me a birthday button! I’ve been to Walt Disney World several times on my birthday and have never received one at check-in. I just knew this was going to be a great trip!

Photobucket

Being unfamiliar with CBR, it took us a few minutes to get oriented and figure out which way to go to our village of Aruba. The resort is pretty big and the Custom House, where you check-in, is slightly detached from the rest of the resort which centers on a 45-acre lake and beach.  We were able to pull pretty close to unload our luggage and we were totally surprised at the amount of available parking! We always had to fight for parking at Pop Century, but there were parking spots galore at the CBR!

Photobucket

The six different sections or villages of the CBR are painted different tropical colors. They are all beautiful, but we fell in love with the pink and plum colors of our Aruba buildings. The buildings are surrounded with lush greenery and the curving walkways made it feel more like a park instead of a resort

. Photobucket

We were amazed at all the beauty as we walked along the pathway to our building.  Every couple of buildings in the village had a really neat courtyard with seating areas.   When we found our room in Section 55 and opened the door, we were so surprised at our beautiful corner room!

Photobucket

At this point, all of my fears about CBR began to dissipate.  However, the fears were totally nonexistent when I walked around the corner of the building and saw the incredible beach and lake!

Photobucket

There were plenty of empty chairs and open hammocks on the beach begging you to come sit and enjoy the view! I’d have to fight that urge since we were starving by this time, but I made a promise to myself that I would be back to enjoy some time just sitting on that beach, enjoying that amazing view!

Staying Off Property in Florida

For years we only stayed on property when visiting Walt Disney World. We always purchased the dining plan with three sit down meals as well. We continued this tradition for 7 visits. The advantages of staying on property are tremendous including the Magical Express Transportation to and from the airport, ability to purchase Magic Your Way Tickets and the Disney Dining Plan. Only WDW resort guests have unlimited use of the WDW transportation System and can take advantage of the Extra Magic Hours in the parks. If the parks are overcrowded, WDW resort guests are given priority. There are additional privileges including delivery of merchandise from the park and Downtown Disney stores, beautifully themed resorts that keep you immersed in Disney 24/7, and Disney Cast Members and Disney Guest Service that is incomparable.

In 2008, my parents were unable to use their time share and asked us if we wanted to transfer it to a property near Disney. We had just been in October of 2007 but my parents had to use their time share by the end of June. We were hesitant to stay off property but we now had three children and it made sense to try it out since the accommodations were free! We stayed at the Westgate Vacation Villas and we were less than 10 minutes from the Walt Disney World Resort. The accommodations were only a year old and the space was huge! We were in a two bedroom lock off that had two bedrooms, two queen sofa sleepers, a full kitchen, a mini kitchen, a huge living room, a smaller living room, two full bathrooms, and two sets of washers and dryers. Our oldest girl was seven years old and our twins girls were two years old at the time. We loved the space and the resort. We even loved having breakfast in the Villa before leaving for the parks, cooking and eating a few dinners, and doing laundry. I know it seems crazy to cook and do laundry on vacation! Having access to a full kitchen with the three children was an advantage since they had wasted so much food during our last vacation and we could feed them what they love to eat. The best part about doing laundry on vacation was unpacking clean clothes when we arrived at home. We had never been to WDW in the summer and we were thankful to have purchased two cases of water that we kept frozen so that we could have cold water in the parks. We even went to non-Disney parks for the first time as a family! We were surprised that we found leaving Disney property each night was a nice break from everything Disney.

Advantages:
• Less expensive (okay – so there is no comparison to free but in general off site resorts are less expensive)
• Huge accommodation (on par with the size of bathrooms in the Bellagio in Vegas)
• Quick access to non-Disney parks, restaurants, and shopping
• Found it relaxing not being immersed in the Disney excitement 24/7
• Easier and faster transportation to and from the parks with our own vehicle

Disadvantages:
• None of the perks of staying on property
• We felt like we were spending more money at the restaurants on property because they were not prepaid as part of a dining plan.
• No Disney Theming
• No Disney Guest Service

With that being said, my Husband and I concluded that we really liked it because of the size of the accommodations and convenience of having a kitchen and laundry room. In addition, we have stayed at six different hotels in the Orlando resort area and all three of the Universal hotels. We really missed the Disney theming and the Disney Guest Service. All of these hotels were nice and all of the Universal hotels are themed but it is not the Disney experience. The employees at all of these hotels were courteous but as I mentioned before, the Disney Guest Service is incomparable. If you are a Disney nut then you know that everything at Disney is well thought out and scripted from the placement of every shrub to carrying out the theme to include even the trash receptacles. All Disney Cast Members are trained in the Disney Traditions and are expected to uphold those traditions. They are expected to deliver a seamless experience to the guest. The Disney experience cannot be duplicated. We really missed the convenience and atmosphere of being in a WDW resort.
Although we have enjoyed off site experiences, our next investment will be to join the Disney Vacation Club. We feel that would be the best option for our family especially since we now have four children. We would have the Disney experience and still have the conveniences of home.

Star Wars Weekend – Part 2 – Characters

I hope you enjoyed reading the first part of my recap of Star Wars Weekend (SWW) yesterday. I was attending SWW mostly to meet the characters (I’m now at 150 unique characters I’ve met, yay SWW!) So, today I’m going to concentrate on the where and hows of the character meets.

Before attending, I made sure to re-watch all 6 films. I love the originals, but I don’t think I had seen the prequels since they came out. But I wanted to make sure I knew all the characters I would find! SWW also has characters from the animated series, the Clone Wars, and I didn’t know anything about that. So I made sure to do research to see which characters would be out, so I could look them up and not be completely clueless when I saw them, lol!

A few characters from past years weren’t out this year (R2-MK and Mace Windu), so there were 30 characters out. I ended up meeting 28 of them! The only 2 I missed were from the Clone Wars (Asajj Ventress and Commander Rex), and as I said earlier, if you asked me a week ago who they were, I wouldn’t know anyway, lol! I probably could have met them towards the end of our last day, but we decided to ride Star Tours instead (can’t do SWW without riding Star Tours, right?) I met 17 on the first day, 4 on the second day, and 7 on our last day.

One quick tip, if you have any questions about when characters are out, make sure you ask the Cast Members in black Star Wars shirts. The other CMs with the characters (they are in white and blue stripes) usually don’t know. The right CMs always were able to tell me when a character would be back out, while the others either said they didn’t know, or, I think made things up (one told me Anakin wouldn’t be back for an hour and a half. I asked the black shirt CM, and he told me 4:50, which was about 30 minutes from when I asked.) Also, while most characters have set places to meet, and you get in line, there are several roaming characters. You don’t have to worry about lines, but they are a little harder to stop and get a picture with. If you ask one of the black shirt CMs in that area, they will know exactly when the roaming characters come out as well.

After riding Toy Story Mania, we started off on Friday by getting in line for the Disney characters dressed as Star Wars Characters: Jedi Mickey, Leia Minnie, Stormtrooper Donald, and Vader Goofy. These were probably the characters I most wanted to meet, so I decided to just get in their line and not stop until I met them all, lol. They usually aren’t out at the same time, so it is hard to catch who you want to meet, but thankfully, I didn’t have too much of a problem. They meet next to the Hat, and it’s hard to miss since they have a cute backdrop. We were about 10th in line, and right on the dot of 9am, Mickey came out. After meeting him, I got back in line, caught Minnie, and got back in line thinking it would be Donald…but it was Mickey again. The black shirt CM told me the next time he would be out, so I was able to use my TSM FP. I got back to the line when Donald was still out, and just missed meeting him, BUT, the CM told me Donald would be out briefly with Goofy right before they left for the parade at 11:40. He also let me know that the line would be closed soon. So I just got back in line (the line was closed a few people after me), and was able to catch them together. So basically, the first half of the first day was just getting those 4 characters. I was glad to never have to stand in that line again, lol. Even at 10am that line was brutally hot since the sun is RIGHT on you. I never thought I’d be able to meet a lot more that day, but all of the other lines went much more smoothly.

After cooling down inside for a bit and eating lunch, we got in line for Chewbacca. He wasn’t appearing until around 2, so we were a little early. He meets across from Star Tours, where they have the fun photo spot, but the line was all the way back to the Sci-Fi Dine-In. Once the line started moving, thankfully most of his line was in the shade. When we met him, an Ewok (Logray) was also with him. From what I heard from others who met him earlier in the day, he’s alone before the parade, and an Ewok joins him after the parade. Both Chewy and Logray were lots of fun to meet.

While waiting in line, I saw Queen Amidala walk by, and then members of the Cantina Band came out and start walking around the area. After meeting Chewy and Logray, I was able to catch one of the Cantina Band members, my first roaming character! I asked if he signed, and he motioned that he didn’t, but one of the others did. There was a mob of people around the others, so I just decided to be content with getting my picture and moved on. I ended up not meeting Queen Amidala until the next day. She meets a little past where Chewy meets, next to the Sounds Dangerous theater. She also has a pretty backdrop that you can’t miss. Her line usually isn’t bad throughout the day, though she leaves during the 3pm Pixar parade.

Then we headed over towards the Streets of America, where there are more roaming characters. There are several roaming Clone Troopers, as well as a few Jawas in this area. I was able to easily meet a Clone Trooper, but the Jawa kept turning around and away from me, and it was hard to get a picture with him. I had better luck the second day, and there was even a Photopass photographer near there that took a few pictures of us! The Jawas also love to make trades. I saw someone trade a paper clip and get a used soda can in return, another get a set of stickers. I forgot to bring something to small to trade, but on the second day, the Jawa took out a toy camera, and kept trying to trade it for my own camera! I kept saying no, I think I like mine better, lol!

In between that area and where the Cars characters meet, you’ll find the Clone Wars characters. The first day, I walked by and there were 3 characters meeting together. I got in line on the second day, and met Ahsoka Tano and Commander Cody together, though Commander Cody was just about to leave. This line was pretty short, so it should be easy to catch who you want. They also meet in front of a great backdrop. If you are there on a non SWW day (or when the characters aren’t out), you can get a great photo with just the backdrop!

The Jedi Council also meets in the San Francisco section of the Streets of America, right next to the Singing in the Rain umbrella. After meeting the random characters in the area, I got in line and met Shaak Ti. I got back in line and was able to meet Anakin Skywalker. The next day I came back, wanting to meet the last Jedi member meeting, Kit Fisto. This was the only time I got to the front of the line and wanted a different character. Thankfully they let us wait (there were about 3 of us waiting.) I lucked out and I met him, Shaak Ti was still up there, so I got to meet them together. I think of all the characters I met, Shaak Ti was the most talkative. She talked to me about the droids on my shirt, becoming a Jedi, and showing me Jedi poses to do for our pictures. I checked this line a few times, and it never seemed that long of a wait.

Then we walked to the Backlot area, where you can find a ton of characters. Here you can meet Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Jango Fett, and 5 roaming characters. After meeting Anakin, of course we had to meet Darth Vader next! This is usually one of the longest lines of the day, so I was surprised that the line didn’t look too bad, and we were told it was only a 30 minute wait. I was planning to get in his line first thing the next day, but with that short a wait, we just hopped in line. I don’t know what happened, but the wait actually was over an hour. However, it isn’t as bad as it sounds since the line is undercover (so, no sun, not as hot!) Plus, watching Vader with everyone was incredibly entertaining. It was worth it just to watch him perform with everyone. One girl took her shoe off for him to sign, and he made her get on the ground and bow before he would do it. Another guest tried to hug him, and he did not approve. He also force choked several guests (I was going to ask for that pose, but as I usually do, I chickened out once I got up there.) When he left and came back to his spot, Stormtroopers would walk him back and forth. The whole thing is fun to watch, and, even with the wait, I don’t see how you can go to Star Wars Weekend and NOT meet Vader!

A few steps away from Darth Vader is Darth Maul. Of all the characters I met, he was definitely the creepiest! I was a little freaked out, I don’t know how kids didn’t run away, lol. He didn’t want to sign my book, but when he did, he snapped it closed, it was funny (even though I know it wasn’t supposed to be!) I can’t talk enough about how in character all of the SWW characters were, it was amazing and made every wait worth it. His wait wasn’t too long, but the line is kind of hidden, so I’m not sure what it looked like at other times during the weekend.

Across from where Darth Maul meets is where Boba Fett and Jango Fett meet. They switch out, and the CM there wouldn’t let you wait for who you wanted to see. Thankfully I was able to catch both by just waiting once each time. I met Jango on the first day, and Boba on the third day. This is another great backdrop, where you can take fun pictures when the characters aren’t out.

The roaming characters in this area were so fun. I met a Stormtrooper, he walked me over to another area. My mom was still in the first area, and I was telling her to come over. The Stormtrooper walked towards her and pointed at her to come over, it was great. There was a Photopass photographer there, so I got a lot of great pictures, even if my mom was somewhere else, lol. I almost got another picture with a Stormtrooper on the third day, but after he motioned that I come over to where he was, he walked away! There are also several Tusken Raiders in this area. As you can see in the picture, this one didn’t like me very much. I asked if he signed, and he just stared at me. Then I said please, and he took the book and signed, lol, but when I asked for a pic, you can see the pose, lol. Another time we were trying to get another character, and didn’t know that one of the Tusken Raiders was behind my mom until he scarred her. If only I had a picture of that!

I was able to meet Gamorrean Guard twice, once on the first day, and again on the third day, when I saw a Photopass photographer was there. I know I said Darth Maul was creepy, but this guy was almost just a creepy! His eyes kind of looked right through you! When I asked if he signed, at first I thought he wasn’t going to, since he posed for a picture. But then he grabbed my book and signed.

On our last day, there was just 2 more roaming characters I needed to catch. I had seen both Zam Wesell and Aurra Sing walk around, but wasn’t able to meet either of them on the first day, so I figured I’d wait in that area until I was able to get a picture with them. Zam Wesell came out while I was in line for Boba Fett, and the guy behind us held our place in line while I ran to try to catch her (one more reason to chat with people while you wait in line!) I was able to get a picture before she started walking around and got mobbed. Aurra Sing was MUCH harder to catch. We held the place in line for the guy behind us, while he ran over with his son, and was able to get a picture and signature. I waited until we met Boba Fett, and then started following her around, but she just wouldn’t stop. She’ll stare right at you, but not really stop. Finally I tried not smiling at her, and she stopped for a second and I finally got the picture! She wouldn’t sign for me though, but she did grab others’ books. Needless to say, while you don’t have to worry about lines, catching these roaming characters can sometimes be a challenge. Once you get a picture with them, though, and just hang back, they are lots of fun to watch interact with everyone.

The last area with characters is inside the Darth Maul tent. Here you can find C3PO, R2-D2, Princess Leia, and Luke Skywalker switching out throughout the day. Along with those last 2 roaming characters, the tent characters were my goal on the last day. What’s really nice about meeting these characters is that it’s inside, so it’s nice and cool. The droids sometimes have technical issues, so they may have to leave before they are supposed to. I got to the tent around 9:20 the first day, thinking they weren’t coming out until 9:30. But when I got there, I found out that the droids had been out since 9:10! Thankfully this didn’t cause a problem for us, and we were able to catch C3PO and R2-D2 together. They were the only characters that didn’t sign (other than the ones I already mentioned that signed, but not for me, lol.) After meeting them, I got back in line and was able to catch Luke. We found out that Leia wouldn’t be back until 11:20, so we were able to use our TSM FPs, and when we came back, were just in time to meet Leia.

I hope I didn’t bore you on my character hunt throughout SWW. It was a lot of waiting, but for a character hunter like me, it was completely worth it! I can’t wait to start scrapping all these character encounters!

Star Wars Weekend – Part 1

I’ve attended many of Disney’s special events over the years. I love the hard ticket events like Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, and the sadly departed Pirate and Princess Party. Then there’s the events everyone with a park ticket can attend, such as the Flower & Garden Festival, and Food & Wine Festival. This year, I was finally able to attend Star Wars Weekend (SWW) at Disney’s Hollywood Studios! I went all 3 days of the first weekend, May 18-20.

There is SO much that goes on during SWW that I decided to talk about it over 2 blog posts. Come back tomorrow to see all the characters I met (the main reason I went to SWW!), and how and where you can meet them, too!

In the first hour the park is opened, there are Stormtroopers on the roof of the entrance, and they are hillarious to listen to! On the first day, they talked about not falling for Jedi mind tricks to let people into the park. Then one said, “She’s using them,” and pointed right at me! I would have loved to just stand and watch them for a while, but we’re always in a rush to get inside!

A quick tip, even though the official park opening time was 8am, they let people into the park at 7:30. There was enough time to ride Toy Story Mania (my favorite) at park opening, and still get in line for some SWW fun!

After entering the park, Boba Fett was on the hat stage with Han Solo in carbonite. I only snapped a few pictures and moved on, so I don’t know how interactive Boba Fett was with the crowd, but plenty of people were hanging out and watching.

DHS is my least favorite park for food, but they have an amazing Darth Vader cupcake at most of the counter service restaurants. It’s a chocolate peanut butter cupcake, and tastes as good as it looks! I highly recommend it! It was so good, we got one both Friday AND Saturday! (Calories don’t count while you’re at Disney, right?)

They also sell R2D2 cups with either food or drinks at several of the stands and counter service restaurants. I wasn’t planning to get one, but when I ordered a frozen lemonade, it somehow jumped into my hands, lol. As I walked out of the park, I had SO many people either ask me where I got it, or I overheard people pointing and talking about it. It was only a few dollars more than the lemonade, and it’s a fun souvenier!

The Legends of the Force Motorcade is fantastic. It’s probably the shortest parade route I’ve ever seen for a Disney parade, and it only takes place once a day, so spots are hard to come by. The parade starts at 12:40 at the entrance of the park, and goes to the hat. Then, everyone comes on stage, so more people seem to watch from the end of the parade than the front. I was going to stake out my spot an hour before, but when I entered the park on Saturday over 90 minutes before the parade, half of one side of the street was already taken! Since I was there that day mostly for the parade, I decided to just grab my spot then. It was worth it, the parade has every Star Wars character you can imagine, plus all the celebrities that meet that weekend. On Sunday, we were going to take a break from the park just before the parade, but decided to watch it again. This time I only waited about 40 minutes towards the very front of the parade. The parade is a must see!

Star Wars celebrities meet during the day, and you have to get a fastpass to get a picture and autograph (which isn’t connected to the FPs for the rides, so don’t worry about that.) The celebrities that met during the first weekend were Ray Park, Dee Bradley Baker, Andy Secombe, Ashley Eckstein, and James Arnold Taylor (the last 2 are the hosts of the weekend, so they are always there.)

People start camping out at 4am to make sure they meet the celebrity they want, though all but Ray Park’s FPs were available when I got to the park Friday & Sunday at opening. I didn’t go to meet any of them (I’m more interested in meeting characters than real people, I guess!) But, even if you don’t have a ticket, the tents where the celebs sign are outside around Echo Lake, so you can go around, see them, and snap a picture. If the celeb isn’t out signing at the time, you can ask a Cast Member, and they’ll give you a head shot that is preprinted with the celeb’s autograph! One day I was able to get a few pictures of Ray Park (the most popular celeb on weekend 1, he played Darth Maul in Episode 1.) I also picked up 2 preprinted autographs of Dee Bradley Baker and James Arnold Taylor.

On the last day I went back to get preprinted autographs for the other celebrities. Dee Bradley Baker was just leaving, so I went to snap a picture on my phone (I was tweeting pics all weekend) and he said, “wait!”, took my phone, switched it so it took a front picture & took a pic of us together!! How nice was that?? I kept saying thank you! I was pretty excited. (If you don’t know his name, you probably know his voice. Along with being the voice of several characters on The Clone Wars, he’s Perry the Platypus on Phineas and Ferb, and does many other voices!)

After that I picked up a preprinted autographs of Ashley Eckstein. It was the end of the last day, so they were already packing everything up, so I didn’t get a chance to pick up the other 2. So if you want to pick those up, make sure you do that before the end of the last day!

There are lots of SWW merchandise you can buy. Some of the main shirts can be found in stores and stands all over the park. There is a HUGE tent with tons of merchandise for both SWW and Star Wars in general, called the Darth Mall. It’s found behind Rock n Roller Coaster (and offers a cool view of Tower of Terror.) On the first day of the first weekend, the line to get into the tent was 2 hours! I waited until the end of the first day, and the wait was short. I went back for characters on the third day, and there was even smaller lines. Even if you don’t plan to buy anything (haha!), it’s fun to look around at all the fun Star Wars stuff! We ended up getting the main SWW shirt (it has Jedi Mickey fighting Darth Maul Donald), a few pins, and a picture frame that you can purchase if you spend a certain amount (it also has Jedi Mickey fighting Darth Maul Donald.) On our third day, we spent a while just looking around. They also have artists and vinylmation artists signings towards the back of the tent.

I ended up not seeing any of the shows, including the Hyperspace Hoopla. I know everyone loves it, but the pictures I saw of the crowd seemed a bit crazy, and I knew someone would end up putting their child on their shoulders right in front of me after waiting an hour, so I just decided to watch it online. They also show Hyperspace Hoopla on the big screen outside the American Idol Experience, and it’s not as crazy around there, so that’s another option if you don’t want to deal with the crowds. I was hoping to catch at least one of the shows in the Premiere Theater with the celebrities on our last day, but we ended up leaving the park for a few hours to eat lunch & relax a bit in our room.

One last tip, there’s a really cool Photopass Magic Shot you can get where you are having a lightsaber battle with Darth Vader! I won’t have my Photopass pics for a while, so I can’t post my picture here. Just find a Photopass photographer that is carrying a lightsaber, and they should be able to do this magic shot! I got one while waiting for Darth Maul, and another by Rock n Roller Coaster, after leaving the Darth Mall.

I’ll be back tomorrow with all 28 characters I met during the weekend!

The Disney Dining Plan – Is It Worth It?

I’ve heard many questions about the Disney Dining Plan and whether it’s worth it. Maybe I can help answer some of your questions and concerns. In my nearly 9 years of marriage, my husband and I have taken 5 trips to Walt Disney World. Out of those 5 trips, we’ve stayed on-park for 4 of them, and used the Dining Plan each time. Three of those times we’ve gone with Disney’s free dining offer (and one time we upgraded from Quick Service to Deluxe) and the remaining trip we paid the full price for the plan, but used a room discount offer. Let me share with you our experiences with the Dining Plan, and what we feel are the pros and cons. But, if you don’t want to keep reading, let me tell you upfront, that even with the cons I am going to mention, my husband and I still will likely use the Dining Plan on our next trip, even if it’s not a free dining offer!

Let me quickly go over the basics of the Dining Plan for those of you who are not familiar with it.

Quick Service Plan

I’ve never used this plan, but here’s what it includes:

  • 2 Quick Service meals per night of stay per person
  • 1 Snack per night of stay per person
  • 1 Resort Refillable Drink Mug per person

Dining Plan

This is the plan we’ve used 3 of our 4 visits. This is what’s included:

  • 1 Quick Service meal per night of stay per person
  • 1 Table Service meal per night of stay per person
  • 1 Snack per night of stay per person
  • 1 Resort Refillable Drink Mug per person

Deluxe Dining Plan

We’ve used this plan one time. This is what’s included:

  • 3 meals per night of stay per person (they can be table or quick service)
  • 2 snacks per night of stay per person
  • 1 Resort Refillable Drink Mug per person

Disney also offers a Premium and Platinum package, but we’ve never used those, so I won’t be covering them. Although we haven’t used the Quick-Service I wanted to mention it since it is the default free dining plan when you stay at a Value Resort. Your meals and snacks are issued as credits. Some table-service restaurants (Hollywood Brown Derby, Cinderella’s Royal Table and others) require 2 credits per meal. Not every restaurant on-park is included in the plan. Disney has some great brochures that they update regularly with where all you CAN eat though. Snacks options are pretty open. The main thing we’ve seen is a limitation by cost (generally no more than a $5 item is allowed). We’ve gotten cupcakes, Mickey Bars, milkshakes, candy, drinks, Dole Whips, the Food Festival at Epoct and many more things with our snack credits. You can order an appetizer or alcoholic beverage, but you just pay for it separately. At the end of each meal, your server will give you a receipt telling you how many credits you have left for that type (quick, table or snack). Disney really helps you keep track of your credits. If you’d like to read some incredibly detailed information the Dining Plan, visit the Disney Food Blog. I don’t want this post to become a mile long, so I hope you don’t mind my redirecting you to another resource. 🙂

Like I said, not every restaurant is included with the Dining Plans, but let me list for you a few of the ones we’ve enjoyed with it:

  • The Crystal Palace
  • Narcoossee’s
  • Chef Mickey’s
  • The California Grill
  • Ohana’s
  • Whispering Canyon Cafe
  • Cape May Cafe
  • Sanaa
  • Coral Reef
  • Le Cellier
  • La Hacienda de San Angel
  • Nine Dragons Restaurant
  • Teppan Edo
  • Tutto Italia
  • Hollywood Brown Derby

Our first experience with the Dining Plan was in May 2008. Our first trip to Disney had been off-park and we had been less than happy about what we ate. Since Disney had a free dining offer we figured, why not! We had planned enough ahead that we were able to make Advance Dining Reservations (ADRs) for all of our table service restaurants. We were on the regular Dining Plan this trip. Except for breakfast, both table and quick service options include an entree, drink (non-alcoholic) and a dessert (or a full buffet like at Crystal Palace). Gratuity is NOT included. The weather in Orlando was pretty hot and humid, so we struggled with eating everything, plus we had not planned well and were hopping around from park-to-park far too much. We ended up not using all of our quick-service credits (and credits do EXPIRE at midnight on your last day – the day you check out of the resort). After we returned home we kicked ourselves because we didn’t realize how many incredible snack options were out there! We wasted too many of our snacks on drinks… Bad decision, trust me on this one! If you don’t believe me, visit the link I provided you above for the Disney Food Blog! Both my husband and I loved all of our food options, and that we ate at many restaurants we normally wouldn’t have tried, mainly due to budget constraints.

We returned to Walt Disney World in December 2008, this time with my parents. Once again we were on the regular Dining Plan (it is the most popular) but we paid for it this visit. My parents weren’t sure about the plan, but since this was our Christmas present to them they had little ground to stand on! Both my mom and dad LOVED the plan. They really enjoyed all of their options, and the large variety of restaurants they could choose from. And yes, they got full as well. On our last day my dad cracked me up, he went around like a mad man making sure to use up the rest of his snack credits!

The next time we made it to Disney was in September 2010. We once again were on the free dining plan. This time we had a plan, we weren’t going to waste any credits! Unfortunately, we still did, lol! We had reservations at a couple of buffets and were so full that we ended up not using all of our quick-service credits. But believe you me, our snack credits were not wasted.

Our most recent trip was in November 2011. We were using Disney’s free dining promotion and staying at the Pop Century. But, this was our anniversary (yep, we were actually THERE on our anniversary) so we upgraded to the Deluxe Dining Plan. We really didn’t want to use quick-service credits, since those are the ones we wasted the most, and we felt that having the option to use a table-service restaurant every meal would benefit us. And, 2 snack credits a day… Well, let’s just put it this way, my husband’s sweet tooth didn’t complain! One thing we had found ourselves doing on previous trips was ordering appetizers and they are included with the Deluxe Plan, so that was another win for us.

Now, to break it down for you, here we go!

PROS of the Dining Plan

When you go to Disney on a budget, but still want to eat well, the Dining Plan can really help you keep on track. All of your food (minus gratuity) is paid for up front. All you have to do is go in, order and eat, that’s it. No worries about breaking the bank. You WILL get full on the Dining Plan, there is no doubt about that. Getting enough to eat is not a concern. There are plenty of choices of where you can eat, and it’s easy to explore new cuisines. And, if you’ve never needed this you may not be aware of the fact that Disney is great at working with you if you have special eating requirements (kosher, allergies, etc). You just need to let your server know and they will have you work directly with the chef to make sure your needs are met. Plus, by eating on-park you’re getting that much more time in the magic. And, Disney restaurants are incredibly themed as well. I think one of our favorites is the snacks. On our last trip we loaded up with caramels from the Karamel Kuche store in the Germany Pavilion at Epcot.

CONS of the Dining Plan

Our biggest gripes with the plan have been few, but here you go:

  • If you want to split a meal for a light lunch, etc, many restaurants do not allow this on the Dining Plan. You still will be charged for 2 credits, even if ordering 1 meal.
  • Sometimes we have a difficult time eating everything. Our frugal, don’t waste anything, mindset kicks in and we sometime overeat, or feel guilty.
  • It’s easy to plan too many table-service meals and you may feel as if you don’t have enough time playing.
  • If you don’t use all of your credits, there are no refunds or extensions. All credits do expire at the end of your trip.
  • If you’re a last minute person, you may find it difficult, if not impossible, to fill your table-service credits. So, to make the most of the Dining Plan, you need to plan ahead. How much honestly depends on the restaurant and the time of year. For our November 2011 trip we were able to get into every restaurant we wanted except 1, and we only started planning about 10 weeks out. But, cutting it that close IS a gamble.
  • We’ve never used the plan with children, but I do know that children need to order off the kid’s menu. For some of you, this may be an issue, I know it all depends on the child.
  • If you like a glass of wine with your dinner, alcohol is not included. You CAN order it and just pay the cost, but you need to be aware of this restriction. Disney no longer offers the Wine and Dine add-on.

I’m sorry that I’ve not included any pictures of our food here! This post has gotten far longer than I had planned for it to, but I wanted you to get as much information as possible. If you have any questions, let me know, and I will do my best to answer them!

If you’re still not sure about the Dining Plan and if it’s for you, I suggest you try and visit when Disney has their free dining offer available. If it’s free, then you’re not out anything, right? And, that way, if you don’t like it you won’t be beating yourself up.

Bon appetit! And here’s to your next magical vacation.
