Characters Meet & Greet

I’ve had a few people asking me about how to get better and funnier pictures with characters. We are big character hunters in my house, but I never realized before how many characters’ pictures we take in a trip before I started to choose a few for this post. We have been to Disney World 4 times and once to Disneyland in the past 4 years. On these trips we have met 119 unique characters (120 if we count my oldest son battling Darth Vader at the Jedi Training Academy), and we have been lucky to find a few unusual and rare characters like Bolt, Jack Sparrow, Rabbit from Winnie the Pooh and the Hag.

The first thing we like is to always have an autograph book for the characters to sign. It’s a good way for shy kids to approach the characters and start some fun interaction. The last autograph book I made I had all of the pictures my kids have taken with each specific character in a themed page (single or double page) for each character. I printed it as a 12×12 album and it was a total hit with the characters and cast members. The characters always have so much fun seeing their pages and sometimes they spend a long time checking your book.

Here is an example page from my book:

And here are some reactions from the characters:

I’m not sure I have lots of tips on how to get good character pictures, so I’ll just show a few examples of how my family enjoys character interactions. I have one main piece of advice – ALWAYS have your cameras ready, and snap away. I always start taking pictures when we are still waiting in line. Sure, you will like the posed picture you take with Mickey, but you will treasure the one of your son still in line running to meet Buzz for the first time:

Or still after 5 trips running to take his picture with Lightening McQueen:

The excitment of seeing a favorite character for the first time:

Those hugs:

Those kodak moments and group hugs:

Those intimate chats:

If you have a Duffy Bear, don’t forget to take it to your Meet & Greet, Duffy will love it, Goofy might play with it, and Buzz will enjoy his Buzz costume.

The same goes for your kid’s favorite costumes. Who know if it’s your little Peter Pan’s lucky day and he gets to duel with Captain Hook?

Allow yourself to be silly and play with the characters:

And if someone ends up on the floor in a tickling session with Pluto, snap away:

Ask them to make a special pose that relate to their movies:

Or just show some ears (Mickey or Goofy ears):

I think what is the most important piece of advice I can give you is to do what you and your family are comfortable with, and just have fun. You know looking through all of these pictures makes me want to go back and make more fun memories with my kids and the characters.

And yes, there are still some characters that we need to hunt down, like Jose Carioca, the Brazilian parrot from The 3 Caballeros. I had my picture taken with him when I was 14 years old, but we definately need a new one, as I’m not showing that hair style in a scrapbook!

It’s not a zoo, but breakfast there may feel like it…

I am back with another round of restaurant reviews. I thought long and hard about what establishment I wanted to review this time. I decided that I wanted to chat about a character meal and what better one to highlight than one that I frequent on every trip. So get ready for a chaotic, fun-filled experience! My kids LOVE rides! And the ride that they love the most is Expedition Everest. Even though I can only ride once or MAYBE twice a day, they can ride over and over again. I think that is one of the main reasons that we started eating with our friend Donald before the park opened at Animal Kingdom. Just like at the Magic Kingdom, one of the biggest advantages to dragging your butt out of bed early in the morning for a breakfast reservation is to be in the park before opening so that you can be on those rides before most even get to the park. (Yes, you late sleepers know who you are…) I personally don’t care as much about being the first on a ride, but I do love taking pictures of the parks without a mass of people in them. So we choose a day to get up early, make a reservation, get on that early bus, and we end up here.

I have mixed feelings about this breakfast. I do so hate to be negative about anything Disney, since I love the World so much, but I both love and hate breakfast at Tusker House. Now here’s one thing that I don’t like about these breakfasts. I don’t like the picture that they take at the front then try to sell you for $30 bucks or so. I almost always say no, and my hubby always feels bad saying no. However, the photographers are very nice and understanding. And when I asked for the Cast Member to take a picture with my own camera, he not only did so, but he took multiple pictures zooming in and out. I thought that was incredibly nice of him.

There is usually a line to get in, but they are experts at getting through it quickly. I mean really, one thing that Tusker House is good at is being a revolving door getting people in and out. That is actually one of the things that makes me a little uncomfortable eating there. I always feel that I’m being rushed out the door. It is a benefit when trying to get in though. Although I suppose being in the first seating certainly doesn’t hurt. Another thing, it is crowded and loud. They certainly know how to pack those tables in there! I think it is more noticeable than at other places becuase it’s just rectangular tables in rows. You can see all the rows of tables behind the kids.

Upon arriving, the characters came around right away. At some places you’ll get outstanding character interactions. We have always had fabulous luck at ‘Ohanas and Cape May Cafe, but at Tusker House it is pretty much quick take a picture, sign a book, and move on. Which is fine. I know that there are a lot of people waiting to see the characters. I just wouldn’t say that this is where you’ll find the best interaction for your buck. That being said, you will find Daisy here, which my girls love. We also saw Mickey and Goofy in fun safari gear. Here’s an example.

It’s loud, it’s crowded, it’s fast paced…you may ask why we keep going back every trip. Well, the answer to that is simple- besides the early park arrival that is. Food. We love our food. And Tusker House has a breakfast menu that is just different enough from the other breakfast buffets to make it worth it to us. There is cereal, donuts, yogurt, granola, eggs, bacon, sausage, rice, potatoes, some sort of quiche, and don’t forget the POG juice. Yum! I love the big buffet stations. They are so spread out that they never feel crowded like Crystal Palace can.

I mean seriously, those potatoes are GOOD! They have just a bit of spice to them. MMM. And that quiche is yummy too!

So even with its faults, we take the bad with the good and we find that it is worth it for us to continue visiting on our trips. If you decide to visit, make sure to say hello to my girl Daisy for me!

Stroller Rental-Which is right for you?

Most Disney guests know that strollers can be rented in the parks but many don’t realize that strollers can also be rented from a number of outside vendors.  This blog post will offer information on both options to help you decide which is right for you.

Disney strollers (Walt Disney World):

  • One day and “length of stay” rentals available which allow you to customize your rental to best suit your needs.
  • Stroller locations can be found at the front of each park.  Each park also offers additional locations to obtain a replacement stroller (with your receipt) should you accidentally misplace your stroller.
  • Both single and double strollers available for rent.
  • Strollers offer very minimal space for storage/carrying additional items.
  • Since strollers must be returned before leaving the park you do not have to give up space in your resort or hotel to store a stroller.
  • Strollers are constructed of a sturdy plastic which makes them easy to clean and makes it possible to accommodate larger children.  However, this style means the seats are fixed and cannot be reclined but strollers are long enough that smaller children can usually have ample room to lay down comfortably
  • Strollers offer large sun shades which can be a huge benefit in the Florida sun.
  • Strollers feature a three wheel design which makes them easy to handle and maneuver through the park.
  • Strollers are rented on a “first come, first serve” basis so at exceptionally busy times of the year availability may be a problem.

Disney strollers (Disneyland):

  • Offers only daily rental rates but does have a discount if you are renting more than one.
  • Stroller rental location can be found adjacent to the kennel outside the Disneyland Park main entrance and strollers can be taken used in both Disneyland and California Adventure.
  • Only single strollers available for rent.
  • Strollers offer small basket for storage/carrying additional items.
  • Since strollers must be returned before leaving the park you do not have to give up space in your resort or hotel to store a stroller.
  • Strollers offer retractable sun shades to help keep children comfortable.
  • Strollers feature a three wheel design which makes them easy to handle and maneuver through the park.
  • Strollers are rented on a “first come, first serve” basis so at exceptionally busy times of the year availability may be a problem.

Stroller Rental from Outside Vendors:

  • Strollers are delivered to and picked up from your resort at no additional cost.
  • Both single and double strollers are available for rent.
  • Costs vary depending on the number of nights of your stay but in most cases the price is either the same or less than renting in the parks.
  • Since you will have the stroller at your resort you have the benefit of being able to use it from your room to whatever mode of transportation you are taking to the parks.  As well, when you leave the parks you have the convenience of leaving children in the stroller until it is time to board transportation back to your resort.
  • On the reverse side, storing the stroller will take up some space in your room but in the folded position the floor space required is fairly minimal.
  • Strollers must be folded on Disney transportation and the models offered by outside vendors feature an easy one step fold.
  • Strollers feature large retractable sun shades, baskets for storage and some vendors offer the ability to add additional accessories such as rain covers, parent trays for holding drinks etc, or glider boards to attach for older siblings to stand on if they need a little reprieve from walking.
  • Strollers feature a three wheel design which makes them easy to handle and maneuver through the park.
  • Strollers can be reclined for naps or additional comfort for younger children.
  • Since you make reservations for your stroller ahead of time there are no concerns about availability.

Strollers can prove to be an invaluable tool during a Disney vacation and I hope this information will help you determine what will work best for you.  I also recommend giving consideration to using a stroller for slightly older children who may not use one at home but who are still young enough that they could tire easily from the extensive walking.  Some other benefits of using a stroller are eliminating the concern of getting separated from a child in a crowd, being able to move between attractions quicker, giving kids have a comfortable place to sit when waiting for or viewing parades, and having a place to nap if you prefer not to leave the parks for naptime.

Disney Vacation Club

Disney Vacation Club

If you’ve been to any of the Disney parks you’ve probably seen many signs for Disney’s Vacation Club.

Disney’s Vacation Club (DVC) is a timeshare.  I am a DVC owner and will try to give a brief overview, and some of our thoughts both for and against ownership.  Unlike most other timeshares, you buy points which can be used at any time during the year,  banked for the next year, or borrowed to use a year earlier.    The lowest number of points on a contract is 25,  I do not believe there is a maximum.  Each year DVC send out a points chart, using this chart you can see how many points are needed at each resort each day of the year and you can use this information to plan your vacations.     Since bookings are point based, the length of stay, location, and size of accommodations are decided by you (and availability) when you book your stay.

Here is an partial point chart for 2013 from:  www.resalesdvc.com

So if I wanted to stay at Kidani, from Friday, January 11 to Sunday, January 13, 2013 (Fri. and Sat. night), in a Savanah View Studio, I would need 32 points.   It would be 16 pts. each night of the stay.

DVC member have a “Home” resort, this is the resort  you are a part owner of.  Your yearly maintenance fees go towards the upkeep of your home resort and you are able to book stays 11 months in advance.   You can book at other resorts 7 months in advance.    We own at Kidani at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.  We chose this resort mainly because it was for sale when we were ready to buy but also because a one bedroom sleeps 5 and has 2 full bathrooms. In the older resorts, a one bedroom has only 1 bathroom.  With three children moving into their teens year we thought we’d like the extra bathroom and now that we have three teens ages 14, 16 and 18; we NEED the extra bathroom.

Pros for my famiy:
We love staying at different resorts.  With DVC, we’ve been able to stay at Kidani, Bay Lake Towers, Saratoga Springs and Grand California (Disneyland).  So we’ve been lucky and reserving at the 7 month mark has worked for us!

Bay Lake Tower Courtyard

All the DVC rooms (except studios) have a washer and dryer in the unit.  We pack lightly (carry-ons only) and do laundry.   Each night we through a load of dirty clothes into the washer, move to the dryer in the morning and when we get back from the park,  we have clean clothes.

With a full kitchen or kitchenette, we eat breakfast in the unit most mornings.  Food can be delivered to the resort or brought at a local store.   It’s nice to eat without waiting in a line for breakfast and we save some money.  We personally have never eaten dinner in the unit but it would be easy with the full kitchen.

DVC perks are great.  DVC members get discounts on annual passes, water parks admission, some dinning and shopping.  DVC members can also pool hop (not to all pools or all dates though),  can buy the Tables in Wonderland dinning discount card,  and can add the dinning plan to their room without buying a package.   The lounge at the top of Bay Lake Towers is open to DVC members; what a fun way to see the Magic Kingdom fireworks.  However, perks are not guaranteed and can end at any time.

Bay Lake Tower Rooftop View

Staying at a deluxe resort in a one bedroom with a kitchen and laundry for the price of a value resort  (Meaning the amount of yearly maintenance fees and the cost of ownership spread over the 50 years).

Having a living room to sit and relax or wait for the rest of the family to get ready instead of sitting on the bed or waiting in the hall.

Cons for my family:
No discounts on room rates.

No free dinning plans.

Must pay maintenance fees every year.

After 50 years your ownership is over and you own nothing.

So is DVC for everyone?  No.  Is it for us? Yes!  We have vacationed at  Disney World, Disney Land or Disney Cruise Line 13 times in the past 13 years.   We’ve stayed at values, moderate and deluxe resorts.  As our family got older and bigger we wanted more room.  DVC was the answer for us.  We joined about 5 years ago and are looking forward to the next 45 years.  Some day we hope to take grandchildren to Disney World!

Review of Caribbean Beach Resort – Part II

I ended the first part of my review of the Caribbean Beach Resort after checking into the room and spying the gorgeous beach.  That was just the beginning of our wonderful journey.  As we walked along the promenade, the pathway around the lake, we were happy to see that there were beaches scattered all around the rest of the resort.  The views were breathtaking at every turn!

Photobucket

We followed the winding path and took the bridge across the lake through Castaway Cay, a tropical island in the center of the lake.  There were several places to picnic, rest, or play on the lush little island that serves mainly as a scenic cut-through from one side of the lake to the other.

Photobucket

It didn’t take us long to figure out that this resort has an abundance of wildlife, too. We saw all sorts of bunnies, squirrels, ducks, and a lot of birds and lizards!

Photobucket

When we reached the other side of Castaway Cay, we found Old Port Royale, which is also called Centertown.

Photobucket

Old Port Royale is the main hub for many activities at the resort and includes the main pool, marina, rentals, a bus stop, parking, and the building that houses the food court (Market Street), a restaurant (Shutters), shopping (Calypso Trading Post & Straw Market), and an arcade (Goombay Games).

We received free dining with our package and it also came with free refillable mugs. We picked up our mugs at Market Street and decided to get counter service for lunch. There were several different stations to pick from with a variety of fare.  We all enjoyed our food but the Caribbean burger and Cuban sandwich were probably the favorites.

After lunch, we headed back to the room before leaving for Magic Kingdom.  Our vacation was off to a wonderful start, thanks to the beautiful surroundings and amenities of the Caribbean Beach Resort.   It was such a great week and we didn’t have any negative experiences whatsoever during our stay.  It is a very relaxing resort to come back to each evening after a busy day in the parks.

Even though I’m not much of a morning person, I have to admit that the sunrises at CBR were one of my favorite things all week.  On the morning of my birthday, I decided to go for a run around the resort.  The stillness of the resort being bathed in morning light was incredible and such an fantastic way to begin the day of my birthday.  Those colorful images and the memories of those moments will be forever burned into my mind.

In case you are wondering, we did spend a little time on the beach just chilling out on the lounge chairs and in one of the hammocks.  It was never crowded and always quiet and relaxing!

Photobucket

By the end of our stay, the Caribbean Beach was definitely our favorite moderate resort!  I’m sure the beauty and amenities we experienced there will draw us back down those winding paths in the future.

Photobucket

Be sure and save a hammock for me, okay?
