This is a bit unusual, I admit. Don't let it keep you away though! The designer gets to the make the final decision since it is their donation and all. And that is totally fair.

I haven't completed a layout yet so my opinion may not mean anything, however, any challenge I have hosted there are a few layouts that don't follow the instructions to the letter but they receive the prize anyway, because this is a fun supportive environment and I personally don't see there being a 'wrong' way to interpret a challenge. A challenge should make you think and push the boundaries but ultimately the goal is to record a memory.
Whilst the colour match is not perfect, there are colours in there that are close. I feel the challenge has just been interpreted slightly differently. I would be more concerned that requiring exact colours would put off new members, traditional scrapbookers and those who simply don't have many kits, may not be able to get an exact colour and may be intimidated by this. I am a frequenter of this site and even I feel a bit daunted by the challenge now... Obviously this is your challenge and it is your decision ultimately, no matter what is said.

Ay ay ay...I wake up and see this has gotten so crazy. I had given my thought on it privately since I am new and didn't want to step on anyone's toes but since I did a layout, I will say what I did in PM and give my opinion here too. I just don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.
I have Aspergers, so sometimes when it comes to reading directions, I told Laramie last night in fact that sometimes I read things differently than the average person. I might read them in a different way....that being said, when I am in doubt about something, I ALWAYS ask. But since she didn't say just use any shade of pink or magenta, brown, green etc but posted an actual color palette...I could only assume she expected us to use that. So that is what I did. Even the papers and elements in the 2 kits I used didn't really have all the right shades I needed so I altered them within Photoshop to make them fit. I spent HOURS working on it, a lot of it was getting the coloring right to fit the color palette. Connie posted the challenge on her FB in the morning June 26, I worked on it alllll day and I was on it pretty fast and worked until about 2am. Then got up the next morning and was right back on it. My late mother always told me growing up if you are going to do something, do it right...don't half butt (insert the other word here lol) do it. And my jerk "father" always said read and follow the directions. Being an Aspie with OCD, I have to have an eye to detail and follow the directions...though the rebel wild child in me will always add my own flair as well to make my stuff unique(I definitely do it with my cooking and baking lol). I think the layout in question is precious and absolutely adorable. I love pigs so I love piglet. Love the layout. In general, I don't think it comes close enough to the color palette, that's my opinion personally. But I think she did a brilliant and beautiful job. The question posed is should she get the kit...well, I'm still not really sure how to answer cause I'm a soft hearted wishy washy type. I want everyone to win, I want everyone to get a prize! lol I'm the type of person who thinks a person who follows the rules and does the work should get the pay off. But having been a person myself in a position where my mind might have not understood things in the same way as another person, I don't think their hard work should go un-noticed either. So in the end, I think the decision should lie solely with Laramie and Connie, as its Laramie's challenge and Connie's kit. FYI, I've somewhat known Laramie (ScrappingCoyote) from other forums for about a year now and she's super sweet. I really would hate to see anyone upset at her. I know its hard to be the one in charge sometimes for stuff. If something goes wrong, its is frustrating trying to be fair and impartial cause no matter what you do in order to do the right thing, you get made out to be the bad guy. I really hate design drama or drama of any kind. I deal with enough of it on FB that is why I mostly just scrap on forums from time to time now when I take a break from making scrap kits to sell and with my rapidly deteriorating health, I definitely don't want to spend what time I have left fighting and a fussing with people. I've been here since Weds and already this place means something to me. Carol has already even asked me to help her with some stuff. That makes me feel good and special. This is a good place. Don't feel apprehensive about scrapping here. Just started and I have no intentions of leaving this forum. Its a great place. I can't wait to get to know more people!

BTW...someone might want to remove post #42. I did a Google translate on it. Its obviously a fake account or something cause that message translated as a spam commercial advertisement.

In no way was my post meant to reflect negatively on Laramie. Like I said this is her decision and she is just trying to ensure the designers work is not taken lightly. I was just trying to reflect that not everyone who wants to participate may have kits with those exact colours (traditional scrappers especially) and before that post I too was under the impression that I could use shades of the colours presented as the words or close enough were used. Obviously this is not the case and that is fine too, now we all know

I've never participated in a color palette challenge before, so I just want to make sure I have interpreted the instructions correctly.
I know I need to use at least three of the colors in the given palette - can I add in other colors as well? Or do I need to just stick to the palette? I LOVE Connie's PP and would like to play along, I just want to make sure I'm following the rules.

I'm just a volunteer here, like most. But I will drop Carol a note to see if there is something we could do about these things popping up. |

I'm a total newbie and was drawn to the site by this challenge in particular. Can we use our own kits that we've designed?

Good question, Brandi! I make my own kits too. I wouldn't mind using my own kits too in future challenges, that would be fun!

Yes, you need to use three of the colors in the palette. You should get as close as possible to the colors in the palette. When I do a color challenge myself, I leave the palette open and start looking for papers that match very closely. It may take a couple of kits. And always takes a little time. Which, by the way, was why I chose a color challenge since this is a two week challenge. I wanted something to keep you all thinking and working because there won't be another challenge until July 9th now. When a designer creates a kit, there is a palette behind it. The elements will coordinate with the papers. So the trick is finding the right papers. There is "close" and there is the "same shade". I am not looking for just the same shade. I would have not bothered to post a visible palette in that case. I would just said, choose from black, fuschia, green, beige. See what I mean? Part of the fun of challenges is to spark thought as well as creativity. To design a layout with purpose. Challenges don't just say sit down and create a layout the way you want and you'll get an awesome prize. I'm not asking you (or anyone) to buy a kit just to make the challenge. No sir!! Just get as close as you can to three of those closes. Not just any shade.. but honestly close. If someone still can't do that, by all means, drop me a note and I'll think of something else. But with all the elements we have in our stashes, I am betting everyone can hit those colors almost perfectly. |
