Get it backed up challenge! Nov 17 - 28

Since several of our dear MouseScrapper friends have lost a lot of files, let us 'together' make an effort to back up all our files. I want to have us talk it out here (ask questions if needed) - I think we are at our best when we talk and chat about things (both for motivation and support). So let's try something new and do a 'back it up' challenge. I want to hear what files you have backed up - get it done by the end of Nov 28 (the weekend after Thanksgiving).

Files to remember to back up

- Photos

- layouts

- Scrapbooking elements (zipped or unzipped)

- documents

- Export your 'favorites' from your browsers

- Downloads

- Music

- Videos (thanks liriel!)

- Email (offline) / contacts (thanks hsmom!)

- Fonts (thanks discruiser!)

Help me add to this list! Please help us make this back up campaign successful by talking it out, even if to say when you plan to do it, your progress, goals, or how you do it...

My goal: get my files backed up by the end of this Sunday.

Thanks!!! :thanks:

liriel 11-17-2010 11:36 AM

Good idea Carol. Another item to back up is videos. I don't think my husband has backed up any of my digital scrapbook kits yet, so I need to get on him to do it before I lose everything.

tiggernjen 11-17-2010 11:51 AM

I agree Carol, I haven't had any problems yet, but before I do I will start backing up all my digital kits and layouts...Right now, they are on my EHD...I bought 100 CD about a week ago, but haven't done anything with them...My goal is to back up all my files on CD's by next week...I am going away this weekend, so I will start my back up on Monday...

hsmom 11-17-2010 12:06 PM

All these are backed up to an EHD...still makes me nervous. Does anyone use a Carbonite type service and how do you like it?

How about your emails and your contact list?

roxana 11-17-2010 01:25 PM

I don´t have all my scrapbooking supplies backuped, just the Disney file that is huge :D. But all my scrapbooking kits are around 300GB and I would have to buy another EHD for it and my hubby says  way!
My pics and videos were just backed up last week in 2 EHD, and next week I´m making DVDs for each year as my D drive is getting full.
I´m backuping my layouts right now, once I lost all my regulars 2006@2008 and was terrible, i felt depressed everytime I thought in scrapping those pages again, but I have started again and now I´m happy because I´ve learn a lot since and my new pages will look way much better than the lost ones!
Email/contacts never realized it was important to back up them!

My goal for next week : finish backuping my layouts and my pics in dvds!

discruiser 11-17-2010 01:32 PM

I had to have my hard drive replaced (it hadn't failed, but due to the results of a diagnostic test, Dell said my HD was bad and needed to be replaced). Fortunately, I had time to make sure that I backed everything up before the new HD was put in. However, I had forgotten to backup all the fonts that I had downloaded. So...don't forget your fonts!

I also have multiple external hard drives and back everything up to all of them (although, a couple of them need to be updated). A friend of mine lost all her photos when her external hard drive failed.

I have been a delinquent in backing up my files
but this thread is helping me to do it. I have my files in EHD but I am just looking at a service that allows me to do unlimited storage size for $40 a year.
I need to do this before I start backing up dvd's.

THank you for this! I need it!:flowers:

scrappinnewbie 11-17-2010 02:04 PM

Thanks for the motivation to back-up our stuff. I am hoping for a laptop on Black Friday and doing a massive back-up will then follow. I have done pretty well at backing stuff up, but need to do some recent purchases, photos and LO's.

Thanks for the challenge!

scrappinnewbie 11-17-2010 02:11 PM

I would also suggest that if you back-up your photos, etc... to DVD's that you consider taking them to an off-site location. Like your office, your parents....etc... That way if you ever had a house fire, you wouldn't lose all your stuff...

I know... sounds rather gloomy and I would never wish that on anyone, but it does happen. I know I would be devastated in losing all my possessions, but I would be sadder to lose my photos... They just can't be replaced.

Just wanted to toss out that suggestion...

The problem I see with most of these online backup services is that they only retain what you have active on your computer so if you fill up an EHD and replace it with a new one, the old one will fall off the online service after 30 days or so.

I back all of my final JPEGS up to externals, DVD's, and flickr pro (set on private). Flickr pro is $25/year and you have unlimited storage for JPEGS.

What service is this?

Any other suggestions for unlimited back up / storage options (another one here with a large EHD to back up)

Kimberly, do you back up all your pictures on Flickr pro also?

It it this one:
https://mozy.com/about

I googled: Best online backup reviews you can read it here:

http://online-storage-service-review.toptenreviews.com/

Mozy was the third but they were the first with the Unlimited storage the other two you pay as you use space.
Mozy also uses Military encryption.
there is more, check their site. The price is reasonable.

I sure do, Donna! Full-resolution JPEGS so I can always download again if I need to do so.

Not 'endorsing' it since I don't know too much about it but for those considering Mozy, I remember seeing a promotion related to Delta Sky Miles. You can get up to 10,000 miles for signing up. There is also a 15% discount, but I thought that the deal ended Oct 31... worth a try though. See details here: http://mozy.com/landing/skymiles/

So far...

I exported my bookmarks. I wanted to do this before I back up my Documents folder. If you don't know how to do this, here are some help pages:

Firefox: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/...+bookmark&as=s

IE: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211089

Chrome: http://www.google.com/support/chrome...n&answer=96816

Safari: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.h...0/en/9263.html

My own tip: use a similar naming convention for each so you can easily find them all later. Here is mine
bookmarks_FF_Nov2010.html
bookmark_IE_Nov2010.htm
bookmark_Chrome_Nov2010.html

Next, I backed up the following following folders to my EHD
- Documents
- Music
- Fonts
(on my PC, found at C:\Windows\Fonts); I discovered that I couldn't back up anything with a arrow over the TT (true type) icon. Not really sure what the icon means, but may have something to do with the way it is installed(?)

These were relative quick to do. Check them off your list! Who is next with the next easy step?

ana_carol 11-18-2010 01:40 AM

uh-ho
my worst nightmare....losing everything
I have all photos/videos and scrap supplies in my desktop computer and in an 1TB EHD, but i just bought a new 1TB EHD to back it up again.
I dont think it wold be viable to back up in CD like someone mentioned all 400GB i have in the EHD

I promise to do the back up until nov 28th

By any chance, Do you know if Flick keeps the same resolution of pics and size?
I read somewhere that some Web services change the size of pics to save space. I was just wondering. (I think i read it in Smugmug)

Only the Flickr Pro accounts can store full-resolution images. Here's the info from their HELP section:

Quote:

Are there limits on file sizes or file types for uploads?
With a free account, you can upload photos up to 10MB in size, or 2 videos per month- up to 150MB for each video. If you have a Pro account, you can upload photos up to 20MB and videos up to 500MB in size. For more on video files and types supported, please visit the Video FAQ

Flickr officially supports JPEGs, non-animated GIFs, and PNGs. You can also upload TIFFs and some other file types, but they will automatically be converted to and stored in JPEG format.

As you publish photos, they're compressed and resized by Flickr (if necessary) in the following sizes:

75x75 pixels
100 pixels (on the longest side)
240 pixels
500 pixels
Large (which will be 1024 pixels if it exceeds that length)
The original size (if you have a pro account)
To access all of these sizes for a photo, click the "All Sizes" link on the individual photo page.

If you have a pro account, we also store your high-resolution originals, which you can download at anytime as long as you remain Pro. Anyone can access public photos and download the high-resolution (original) size from a Pro account, unless you limit access to the downloadable image.

Thanks for the flickr information. While it would be hard to overcome losing my files or music...they could eventually be replaced or recreated....my pictures, not so much. Flickr sounds like it might be a nice option in addition to my EHD.

Backup to my EHD was completed today.

poohaddict 11-20-2010 04:13 AM

I should learn from my OWN mistakes and BACK everything up!!! I lost all my kits and Pages about 3 months ago. I WILL BACK EVERYTHING UP BY SUNDAY NOV.28TH.
:thanks: Carol for the kick in the pants

PrincessMouse 11-20-2010 05:32 AM

Backing up my LAST portrait client files to Flickr now.

Carolc 11-22-2010 12:08 AM

How are you all doing on your backups? I didn't get any of it done this weekend as it was crazy busy. Realistically I don't know if I will finish before my trip, but I will try to get a few more important folders done.

WDW Scrap Princess 11-22-2010 04:21 AM

I used all the time reading and shopping for a backup provider on-line and did nothing.:pc:

jloane 11-22-2010 11:34 AM

I just used Carbonite to recover most of my files after a hard drive crash. (I'm one of the reasons Carol started this thread!) My big complaint (and it's partially my own fault) is that Carbonite was not backing up my entire hard drive. I've changed my settings, so now everything should be backed up. I'm planning to check on it in a week just to be sure.

Carbonite's techincal support was OK--long time on hold no matter when I called. 3 of the 4 reps with whom I spoke with were very nice and helpful. One was absolutely horrible--nasty, nasty attitude.

But now that I had such a bad scare, I'm planning to use Carbonite, an external hard drive and DVDs that I will send to a friend. I'm beyond paranoid these days!!

cmtscrap 11-23-2010 06:41 AM

All of my kits are located on two computers (laptop and desktop) and EVERYTHING is now backed up on three EHDs. One of them is in my office and two are at home (these will be going in a safe when we get it after the first of the year). All of my photos are backed up on three different web services (Snapfish, Creative Memories, and RitzPix). All of my digital albums are backed up on Creative Memories Digital.

I had an EHD crash on me about a year ago, but fortunately, I was able to recover everything. This is why I now have three EHDs, and they are all 2TB. Who knew we would ever be using this much data. My first computer only had 8GB for a hard drive :ack:.

WDW Scrap Princess 11-23-2010 06:58 AM

I saw two services that I am interested:

One is TrendMicro $29 a year for unlimited storage

CrashPlan - has awesome features.

Now got to decide!

Princess Janas Mom 11-23-2010 02:16 PM

I am so proud of all you guys. I just wished I had done this 2 weeks ago. You can bet when I get things started again, I will back up probably more than I need to.:)

bcalberti 11-27-2010 04:25 PM

new person here - but even with externals - they can crash, be stolen, lost in a house diasaster. We spend so much time on our digital supplies and layouts, which can be replaced. But to me, you will never be able to replace my children's pictures or those of my parents who have passed away.

With that said, I back up (Mozy, $5/month). I feel more comfortable with that and it runs twice a day so I know I'm always caught up. If I do a bunch of downloading or moving things around, I just back it up again when I done with the task.

Happy Scrapping - Barb

liriel 12-03-2010 02:57 PM

I am now fully backed up with my most important items burned to cds....that being said it was after a spiral of events. My husband called me from his work a couple of days before Thanksgiving asking me if I had all of our mp3s on my Zune. To which I said no not everything...a big chunk but not everything...especially not any of my x-mas music or most of the music only he likes. He says oh ok. Hangs up. When he gets home that night he tells me that he thinks our EHD is broken, but he thinks he can get the stuff off it at work the next day. Well the next day at work he trys everything he knows to get the data off the drive...recovery program, freezing it, dropping it (yes it works sometimes), and he wasn't able to recover anything off it.

Luckily it was our back up drive and I still had all of my pictures, scrapbook pages, and digital scrapbook kit files. We did lose all of our mp3s...except the ones I had on my Zune...we had a lot of mp3s. He had been re-organizing them off of the EHD while on the train to and from work over several weeks, and had pulled them all off of our computers. Now a lot of the music we can re-rip from cds ( a lot of work), but I had quite the collection of Christmas music from the days when you could get them free on napster...some were rare that I may never get again. I am so bummed since I love Christmas music. I listen to it non-stop from the day after thanksgiving until the day after christmas. Now I have been resigned to listening to the Sounds of the Seasons music channel on my Cable tv or on the ...gasp...radio in my car. I can only take so much Robert Goulet before I crack.

So needless to say it prompted my husband to finally burn our stuff to cds and keep a copy at his work (though I had been asking him to do it for months). I am sad about my Christmas music being gone, but am very thankful that that was all we lost.

So here is another public service message.... BACK UP YOUR FILES....we may now get back to Robert Goulet.:D

I have a 2 TB external hard drive that runs an automatic backup while im working. I got mad about something earlier in the year (actually it was when my husband brought divorce papers home; but all is fine now) and slammed my laptop top so hard (and had no backup) that I cracked the hard drive and lost over 100 pages that were finished. So, I completely stand on my little soap box and preach back up please. Don't lose your work. It's not worth it.:pc:

What kind of external drive do you have?

cassidyk 12-10-2010 11:11 AM

We currently have a 1 TB external hard drive that my husband has hooked to our home network for extra storage and back-up (it is set for nightly back-ups) but because I just don't feel completely confident with one backup I put an additional 1 TB drive on my Christmas list that we will use to do periodic back-ups (I am thinking weekly) and will live in our fire proof safe as an added means of protection.

Better safe than sorry, right?

This sounds like a good plan, Kathryn. What brand external hard drive will back up your network automatically? I'd like to look into it.

Thanks
