I've taken my tripod into every park except for AK. I've never had a problem. I know of people who take a TON of photography equip into the parks and basically go to just take pics of things!
I always took my lightweight tripod which is a bit smaller (4ft) and I can stash in a locker til I want it. I've seen lots of gorilla pods and tabletop tripods in the parks too. They're really small and can fit in your purse!
